For years, a fight between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano existed mostly in conversations about what could have been. Two of the most influential women in combat sports took different paths, built different legacies, and helped shape women’s MMA into what it is today. On Saturday, May 16, those paths meet in Los Angeles as ROUSEY VS CARANOstreams live globally on Netflix from Intuit Dome. The event marks Netflix’s latest push into live combat sports and brings together one of the most recognizable fight cards in recent memory.

Fight week officially began this week in California with open workouts at Venice Beach, where Rousey, Carano, Nate Diaz, Francis Ngannou and other fighters showcased their final preparations ahead of the event. The atmosphere carried the energy of a major sports moment, but the attention remained fixed on Rousey and Carano — two women whose careers helped make mainstream interest in women’s fighting possible.

Despite the anticipation surrounding the matchup, neither woman approached the week with hostility. Rousey spoke openly about her respect for Carano and the unusual bond shared by athletes who helped build the same industry.

“If she takes me out and puts me down on the canvas, I think that she’s going to be the first person to help me up,”Rousey said. “And if I take her down and tap her out, I’ll be the first person to help her up. We don’t need to hate each other to be able to give each other our best.”

The comments reflect something larger than competition. This fight arrives at a time when women’s sports continue to break attendance, viewership and compensation records. For Rousey, legacy appears closely tied to changing the structure of combat sports itself.

When asked what greatness means in MMA, Rousey answered simply: “Making history, having a cultural impact, and influencing the future of the sport.”

She later pointed to the significance of compensation and bargaining power for women fighters, suggesting this event could create opportunities beyond a single night in the cage.

“Me and Gina are smashing the record for the most women have ever been paid in combat sports,” Rousey said. “Who says the success of this fight can’t create the rival UFC needs and give fighters the bargaining power that they’ve never had?”

Rousey’s most talked-about comment came near the end of the press conference.

“I am not chasing greatness… I am greatness.”

The statement was bold, but not unexpected from an athlete whose career has consistently been defined by certainty and ambition.

Carano, meanwhile, reflected less on legacy and more on gratitude. After years away from professional fighting, she described the return as emotional and unexpected.

“I’m just trying to relish every moment and not rush through it,” Carano said. “I never thought I would be doing this… Five years ago I gave up the dream.”

She also credited Rousey for motivating her return.

“Having Ronda as the goal has gotten me out of bed every single morning,” Carano said. “One day the women that I inspire are going to inspire me right back. I just had no idea it was going to be Ronda Rousey.”

The fight is being promoted as a historic showdown, but what makes it notable may be less about rivalry and more about timing. The women who helped push combat sports into mainstream conversation are returning to an industry that now offers larger audiences, more investment, and greater visibility for female athletes.

Saturday’s outcome remains unknown. What is clearer is the broader significance: two pioneers stepping back into a space they helped create.

ROUSEY VS CARANO streams live on Netflix on Saturday, May 16, with preliminary fights beginning at 3 PM PT and the main card starting at 6 PM PT.
