Los Angeles is about to host one of the most anticipated fights in combat sports history.

Former UFC champion and Olympic medalist Ronda Rousey will return to mixed martial arts to face pioneering women’s MMA star Gina Carano in a headline bout on May 16, 2026 at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. The fight will stream live globally on Netflix, marking the platform’s first-ever live MMA broadcast.

The matchup is already being called a historic moment—not just for the fighters themselves, but for the future of how combat sports are distributed and consumed worldwide.

The bout will take place under the Unified Rules of MMA, contested over five five-minute rounds with 4-ounce gloves inside a hexagon cage.

A Comeback Few Expected

For Rousey, the fight represents a dramatic return to a sport she once dominated but believed she had left behind.

“I never thought I would come back,” Rousey said during Tuesday’s press conference in Los Angeles. “It didn’t cross my mind at all.”

Rousey explained that her love for martial arts resurfaced unexpectedly while helping train her coach in judo techniques. After years away from competition due to neurological concerns, teaching the sport reignited the passion that had once defined her career.

“Once I started getting deep into it again… it reminded me of the joy that it gave me from the very beginning,” she said.

That renewed connection ultimately led to the fight that fans had dreamed about for over a decade.

A Rivalry Built on Respect

Rousey revealed that the fight began with a personal outreach to Carano after seeing her longtime peer struggle through difficult years.

“I was like, you know what—we both need to reclaim our identity together and rewrite our own ending,” Rousey said.

Carano, widely considered one of the pioneers of women’s MMA, said the invitation was impossible to ignore.

“To share this moment with her and to be the one she would come back for—she’s my one as well,” Carano said. “We get to live once, and this makes me feel so alive.”

Carano added that discussions about the fight began as early as December 2024, when UFC president Dana White first approached her about the possibility of facing Rousey.

A Fight That Nearly Happened in the UFC

While the bout was originally explored with the UFC, negotiations ultimately led the fighters down a different path.

Rousey said she initially brought the fight to UFC leadership out of respect for her longtime relationship with the organization.

“I said, I can do this on my own, but I would rather fight for you than fight for me. Just make it make sense,” she explained.

However, timing issues and Carano’s request for additional training time shifted the plan—and opened the door to a groundbreaking partnership with Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) and Netflix.

Now, the fighters believe the event could become the most-viewed MMA fight in history.

Netflix Enters the Fight Game

The event will also serve as a milestone for the streaming giant.

Netflix has increasingly moved into live sports programming, and this fight represents the platform’s first official MMA broadcast, following record-breaking boxing events streamed on the service in recent years.

Those events—including Jake Paul’s 2024 fight against Mike Tyson—drew over 125 million viewers globally, demonstrating the massive potential for combat sports in the streaming era.

The Rousey–Carano event could push that evolution even further.

A Massive Fight Card

The night will also feature another high-profile matchup.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou will make his long-awaited return to MMA competition against Brazil’s Philipe Lins in a co-main event.

Ngannou has spent the past few years competing in boxing and recently captured the PFL Championship in 2024, making his return to MMA one of the most anticipated moments in heavyweight fighting.

“This is the biggest opportunity of my MMA career,” Lins said. “One victory over Francis is going to put my name in MMA history forever.”

A New Era for MMA?

MVP cofounder Jake Paul described the event as a turning point for the sport.

“MMA is in a weird position right now—it’s the wild west,” Paul said. “We have a massive opportunity to disrupt the space and put fighters first.”

The promotion hopes the event signals a broader shift toward fighter empowerment and new broadcast models.

For Rousey and Carano, though, the moment remains deeply personal.

After years away from the cage, both fighters say the fight represents something bigger than competition.

“It’s healing,” Carano said. “It’s exciting. It’s everything I could have hoped for.”
