Breanna Stewart led Team USA back from a 14-point deficit against France as the Americans captured their 12th FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup championship.
Another tournament. Another gold medal. But this one didn’t come without a fight.
The USA Women’s National Team defeated France 97–79 in Berlin on Sunday to win the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, extending one of the most dominant runs in international sports. The victory marked Team USA’s fifth consecutive World Cup championship and 12th overall, but the final score doesn’t tell the full story of a championship game that, for a while, looked like it could go in a very different direction.
France entered the final undefeated and quickly showed why. After falling behind early, the French went on a 21–2 run and eventually built a 14-point advantage in the second quarter—the largest World Cup deficit the United States had faced since its semifinal loss to Russia in 2006. For a team accustomed to controlling international competition, Team USA suddenly found itself chasing the game.
The Americans didn’t stay down for long. They chipped away at France’s lead before Caitlin Clark connected from three just before halftime, cutting the deficit to 45–43. By the third quarter, the momentum had completely shifted. The United States outscored France 30–12 in the period, with back-to-back three-pointers from Kahleah Copper and Jackie Young helping turn a close championship battle into a commanding American lead.
At the center of it all was Breanna Stewart. The Team USA captain finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the championship game, adding another gold medal to a résumé already overflowing with them. Stewart was named tournament MVP, becoming the first player in Women’s World Cup history to earn the honor twice. It was also her fourth World Cup championship.
Jackie Young delivered one of the strongest performances of the final as well, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. Copper added 15 points, while Clark and Chelsea Gray each scored 12. Young’s performance throughout the tournament earned her a spot alongside Stewart on the World Cup All-Star Five.
But perhaps one of the most interesting things about this Team USA roster was the combination of generations responsible for keeping the dynasty alive. Established national-team stars including Stewart, A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Young, Copper and Kelsey Plum shared the roster with players experiencing their first major senior international tournament, including Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers.
That mix gave this championship a feeling of both continuation and transition. Clark, Reese and Bueckers have already become part of a generation changing the visibility and popularity of women’s basketball in the United States. In Berlin, they also got their first experience with another tradition: the enormous expectations that come with wearing a USA Basketball jersey.
The dominance of American women’s basketball has never belonged to just one roster. The names change. New stars arrive. Veterans eventually move on. But somehow, generation after generation, the standard remains.
And this tournament provided reminders that maintaining that standard is becoming more difficult. Italy stayed within striking distance of the Americans during group play. Spain pushed Team USA in the semifinal before the United States eventually secured a 76–66 victory. Then France built that 14-point lead in the championship game.
Team USA was tested. It responded.
The Americans finished the tournament 6–0 and extended their Women’s World Cup winning streak to 36 consecutive games, dating back to 2006. Their unbeaten run across Olympic and World Cup competition has now stretched two decades.
That competition is arriving alongside something else women’s basketball has been experiencing lately: growth.
The 2026 Women’s World Cup drew a record 236,015 fans, according to FIBA, easily surpassing the previous tournament attendance record of 145,519 set in 2022. Average attendance reached 6,556 fans per game. France made history of its own by reaching its first Women’s World Cup final, while the championship game between France and the United States averaged 1.2 million viewers on TNT in the U.S.
Those numbers tell a story beyond another American gold medal. Women’s basketball is expanding internationally at the same moment its stars are becoming increasingly visible at home. More fans are watching. More countries are investing. And the distance between Team USA and the rest of the world is being challenged.
For now, however, the throne still belongs to the United States.
France challenged them. Spain challenged them. Italy challenged them. And when the final buzzer sounded in Berlin, the Americans were once again standing together with gold medals around their necks.
Twelve World Cup championships. Five consecutive titles. Thirty-six straight World Cup victories. And another generation of American stars now knows exactly what it feels like to win one.
The names on the jerseys may change.
The expectation hasn’t.
Gold remains the standard.
