Minnesota authorities have confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the fatal shootings of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, as well as the critical wounding of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife in what officials describe as a politically motivated attack.

The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, was apprehended Sunday evening following a statewide manhunt. According to law enforcement, Boelter surrendered near his property in Green Isle, Minnesota, after eluding capture for nearly two days. He was armed at the time of his arrest but taken into custody without further incident.

The Attacks

Authorities say Boelter carried out two separate shootings early Saturday morning in the Minneapolis suburbs of Champlin and Brooklyn Park. Around 2 a.m., Senator Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times at their home in Champlin. They were transported to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

Officers later arrived at Rep. Hortman’s home in Brooklyn Park at approximately 3:35 a.m. While conducting a welfare check, police encountered an individual dressed in what appeared to be a police uniform. The man was wearing a vest and badge and was equipped with a Taser and other law enforcement-style gear.

According to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and responding officers at the scene. The suspect fled on foot, leaving behind a vehicle that had been modified to resemble a police cruiser, complete with lights.

Inside the vehicle, investigators found a list containing the names of dozens of Minnesota lawmakers, which authorities say included the victims. Law enforcement officials are providing protection to others named on the list.

Victims Identified

State Representative Melissa Hortman, a Democrat and former Speaker of the Minnesota House, and her husband were both killed. Governor Tim Walz confirmed their deaths at a press conference on Saturday, describing the incident as an “act of targeted political violence.”

Senator John Hoffman and his wife remain hospitalized. Governor Walz stated, “We’re cautiously optimistic they will survive this assassination attempt.”

Federal and State Charges

Boelter has been charged with:

  • Two counts of second-degree murder
  • Two counts of attempted murder

Federal charges also include:

  • Stalking resulting in death
  • Use of a firearm during a violent crime
  • Murder in aid of stalking

Officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing and additional charges may follow. Boelter remains in federal custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 27.

Background on Suspect

Authorities report that Boelter had no verified law enforcement or military background, though he previously operated a small security business. He reportedly impersonated a police officer during the attacks and used a vehicle modified to resemble a squad car.

Officials said the suspect had visited at least four lawmakers’ homes in the early hours of Saturday morning. In one instance, he left when no one answered the door.

Ongoing Investigation

The FBI, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and local law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the case. Officials are also reviewing Boelter’s background, writings, and any affiliations to determine a motive and whether others may be involved.

Law enforcement urges residents to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer by calling 911 before opening the door.

More updates will follow as information becomes available.
