Angel Reese Faced Racist Remarks During Indiana Game — Here’s What the WNBA Is Doing About It

The Chicago Sky’s season opener against the Indiana Fever was supposed to mark a new chapter for the WNBA — one filled with rising stars, electric rivalries, and sold-out crowds. But instead of headlines celebrating the game, much of the conversation has focused on something far more disturbing.

Angel Reese, one of the league’s brightest talents, was subjected to racist remarks from fans during the May 17 game in Indianapolis. And now, the WNBA is investigating.

What Happened

The matchup between Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark was one of the most anticipated of the season. But during the third quarter — shortly after Clark was called for a flagrant foul against Reese — videos surfaced online showing a fan shouting racist comments while Reese stood at the free-throw line.

The footage quickly went viral, sparking outrage from fans, players, and public figures. Many called on the league to take immediate action to protect its players — especially Black women — from targeted abuse.

The League Responds

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert responded firmly:

“The WNBA strongly condemns racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms — they have no place in our league or in society.”

The league confirmed that it is conducting a full investigation and emphasized its ongoing “No Space for Hate” campaign, which aims to eliminate hate in arenas, online spaces, and across the league community. Both the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever organizations are cooperating in the review process.

Caitlin Clark Speaks Out

Though she didn’t hear the comments in real time, Caitlin Clark voiced her support for Reese and the WNBA’s investigation:

“There’s no place for that in our game. There’s no place for that in society.”

Her statement served as an important reminder that competition and mutual respect can coexist — even among rivals.

We Love Competition — But Not at This Cost

At Neon Gurl, we celebrate healthy rivalries, record-breaking talent, and the rise of women’s sports. But there’s a line — and racism crosses it.

We can talk trash. We can cheer loud. We can love one player and root against another. That’s the beauty of sports. But when Black women athletes are targeted with hate for simply doing their job, we all lose.

Angel Reese deserves the same respect and safety as any player on the court. And fans — regardless of who they support — need to remember that.

We’ll continue to stand behind athletes like Reese, who represent more than a team — they represent resilience, excellence, and a new era for women’s sports.

The WNBA’s response is a start. What comes next matters even more.
