Florida State University Shooting: A Tragic Reminder of a National Crisis

On April 17, a mass shooting occurred at Florida State University in Tallahassee, resulting in two fatalities and six injuries. The suspect, 20-year-old student Phoenix Ikner, is the stepson of a local sheriff’s deputy and reportedly used his stepmother’s former service weapon in the attack.

The incident took place near the student union around midday, leading to immediate lockdowns. Among the victims were two university employees: Robert Morales, a campus dining director, and Tiru Chabba, a regional VP at Aramark Collegiate Hospitality.

This tragedy is yet another in a long line of school shootings that continue to plague the U.S. In 2024 alone, there were more than 120 school-associated shootings reported nationwide.

For Gen Z and Gen Alpha, active shooter drills, lockdowns, and the fear of gun violence are part of everyday life. Studies show that the psychological effects of school shootings include heightened anxiety, PTSD symptoms, and a deep sense of disillusionment with national leadership.

Gun reform debates continue, but one thing is clear: America’s youth deserve better.
