At just 25, Mikey Madison has gone from an emerging indie actress to an Academy Award-winning Best Actress, delivering one of the most emotional speeches of the night at the 2025 Oscars. For her transformative performance in Anora, Madison triumphed over Demi Moore, Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Fernanda Torres—a win that many saw as an upset after Moore dominated the award season. But for those who followed Madison’s raw and fearless portrayal of Ani, a Brooklyn sex worker navigating love and survival, her victory was well-earned and deeply deserved.
Standing on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, visibly emotional, she expressed gratitude, disbelief, and a deep respect for the community that inspired her role. Madison, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, admitted that despite growing up in the city, the dream of standing on that Oscars stage had always felt out of reach.

“Thank you so much to the Academy,” she began, nervously reading from her printed speech. “I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me. So, to be here standing in this room today is really incredible.” Winning the BAFTA Film Award just weeks before, Madison was already gaining momentum leading up to Hollywood’s biggest night—but she remained humble, taking the time to acknowledge her fellow nominees. “I just want to recognize the thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful, breathtaking work of my fellow nominees,” she continued. “I’m honored to be recognized alongside all of you. This is a dream come true.”

While Anora took home the night’s biggest honor—Best Picture—it was Madison’s performance that left an undeniable mark. Her portrayal of Ani, a young sex worker swept into an unexpected whirlwind of love, wealth, and consequence, was raw, heartbreaking, and deeply human. In her speech, she dedicated her win to the real-life women whose stories inspired her performance:
“I also just want to recognize and honor the sex worker community,” she said. “I will continue to support and be an ally. All of the incredible people, the women that I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community has been one of the highlights of this entire incredible experience.”
Her commitment to authenticity and her deep respect for the community behind the character set her apart as a performer willing to use her platform to uplift others.
